TUALATIN — The Horizon Christian High School boys basketball team is about ready to jump into state playoff action.
But the Hawks may not be entering the state playoffs in the exact position that they want to be in.
Horizon Christian will open the Class 3A state playoffs as the No. 2 seed from the West Valley League after it fell 59-54 to Dayton in a league playoff championship game played Saturday at Sherwood High School.
The Hawks, who moved to 22-4 on the season with the setback, will start the Class 3A state playoffs Saturday when they host Oregon Episcopal School, the No. 2 team from the Lewis & Clark Conference, in a game starting at 4 p.m.
The Aardvarks bring an overall record of 18-5 into Saturday’s state playoff contest. The winner of Saturday’s game advances to the Class 3A boys basketball state tournament, which starts next Thursday at Willamette University in Salem.
Sophomore wing Jordan Tebbutt paced Horizon Christian in last Saturday’s playoff contest with Dayton with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Senior point guard C.J. Mitchell added 12 points and senior Sam Schifferdecker scored eight.
Dayton, which improved to 24-2 on the season with the victory, got 14 points from Maika Ostling and 13 from Travis Bernards.
Prior to the loss to Dayton, Horizon Christian scored a 61-39 win over Westside Christian in a league playoff game held Friday at Horizon Christian.
Tebbutt had 25 points, six rebounds and three assists in the win. Mitchell had 13 assists and three steals. Freshman post Michael Loomis had six points.
