Kelly Bachran made it further than most.
Of the thousands upon thousands of wannabe pop stars who have tried out for the last nine seasons of the Fox television hit “American Idol,” she’s one of the lucky few who made it past several rounds of cuts, into to this season’s top 46 competitors.
And while that distinction comes with no massive cash compensation, and only a small amount of fame — her name was never spoken on TV, and she was never shown singing — it’s still impressive nonetheless.
The Times caught up with the 23-year-old singer, who’s lived in Tualatin for a year, and asked her about her experience, her plans for the future, and what it was like participating in one of television’s greatest spectacles.
So, what are you doing right now?
I’m actually back in Portland for just a little bit, catching my breath after all the chaos, but I’m actually going to be heading back down to California in a couple weeks.
I’m moving, and I’m not sure exactly what I’m going to be doing. I figure with “American Idol” I kind of severed my ties with a lot of things in the area. In a good way, mostly just things like putting my job on hold, and everything’s just at a natural transition point for me. I figure I’ve got some newfound wings and I may as well keep using them and see where they take me.
So are you going to try and pursue singing down there?
Probabaly not full time. I’ll always be singing, I know that I need music in my life in order to be normal. I’m always going to be pursuing music to a degree. It’s a tricky industry; I think I need to learn a little bit more about it first so I can figure out how I can most effective.
