Not every third grader gets to visit a foreign country, let alone three in a single evening. But students at Bridgeport Elementary School were able to do just that, Jan. 21, as part of the school’s multi-cultural event, Read Around the World.
The event allowed students to learn a bit about other cultures and diversity by visiting different classrooms (or countries) and hearing stories and folktales from their culture.
“Every child, when they checked in, got a passport and a map of the world – the countries that we had that night,” said Ivonne Addison, family liaison for Bridgeport Elementary. “The kids picked a country of their choice and went and listened to a story from that country, then they traveled to their next country and got to hear another story.”
After each child heard their story their passport was stamped, to show that they had visited the country.
Nine classrooms were transformed into a variety of exotic locales, including Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Puerto Rico, Australia, Japan, China and Russia.
“It was something that hadn’t been done before,” Addison said. “We were wanting to do something sort of about cultural activity, and literacy and multi-culturalism seemed like a great way to have a nice evening.”
