The driver who died Sept. 12 in a fiery, two-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 has been identified as 20-year-old Conner Luby of Tigard.

Luby died after the 2001 Saab he was driving collided with a semi-truck at about 2:10 a.m. near the Lake Oswego-Durham exit on Lower Boones Ferry Road, Oregon State Police said.

Oregon State Police Lt. Greg Hastings said Sept. 15 that Luby was driving with a suspended license. There is still an ongoing investigation into what caused the crash.

Police said that the 1998 Western Star tractor hauling a 2008 belly dump-style semi-trailer driven by 36-year-old David Watkins of Vancouver, Wash., was traveling north on I-5 approaching the Boones Ferry Road off-ramp when it was struck from behind by Luby’s 2001 Saab. The impact caused the car to flip and catch fire.

The semi-truck driver and another motorist stopped and used fire extinguishers on the Saab, but were unable to extinguish the fire before the car was fully engulfed, trapping Luby – the only occupant of the vehicle.

Watkins was not injured.

Luby’s Facebook page has become a gathering place for family and friends to share their thoughts on the Jesuit High School graduate and Arizona State University student.

“It has been incredibly comforting to read this outpouring of love … and affection and to find out how many lives he had touched,” a post attributed to the Luby family read. “Conner was a great kid, a great friend, a great brother and a great son.”

There was a celebratory Mass for Luby at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept 15, at Jesuit High School in Beaverton, 9000 S.W. Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway.

Re: Tigard man identified as fatality in Saturday's I-5 crash

To JLS:

Seems like some pretty insensitive comments as well as a lot of speculation on what happened. I would keep my judgements to myself and try to think of how your comments will make his family and friends feel!

RIP Conner....................

Re: Tigard man identified as fatality in Saturday's I-5 crash

It is a sad statement about human nature that a person chooses to hide in the anonymity of the internet and "comment" sections like this one, and make such callous comments as JLS did. Of course the driver was not being careful enough, probably he was speeding, maybe he was intoxicated -- but NONE of that means he deserved to die. Is human life really so cheap to you, JLS, that when a stranger to you dies, all you can think to say is "I have real trouble with all this grief." Shame on you. I have no idea who this Tigard man was, but I am sorry for his life cut short, no matter whose fault it was, and my heart breaks for his family and close friends who will never really recover from this loss.

Re: Tigard man identified as fatality in Saturday's I-5 crash

Not knowing what really happened during this unfortunate accident JLS needs to keep the insensitive and uncalled for remarks unspoken!! This young man had a family and friends that loved and cared very much for him. We all make mistakes in our life's.

God Bless Conner, may his family heal fast from the pain they must be feeling.

Re: Tigard man identified as fatality in Saturday's I-5 crash

I knew Conner and I am extremely upset at his death. He was nothing but a wonderful young man when I was near him. The incredibly insensitive comments by people like JLS are uncalled for and go beyond hurtful. His family are wonderful people and they are suffering beyond what most humans have to endure. The loss of a child is extremely harsh. Hateful and cruel remarks are the last thing needed at this time and the speculaton should be kept to yourself.

Re: Tigard man identified as fatality in Saturday's I-5 crash

I met Conner about six months ago. He always made me smile and he had a way of making everyone he knew laugh. He was able to light up a room as soon as he walked in.

JLS, your comment was not only insensitive, but also completely disrespectful to Conner's family and friends and to Conner himself. No matter what happened on the road that night, Conner did not deserve to die. The world became darker when his light was put out.

RIP Conner. You are truly loved and missed!
