He was born on Jan. 31, 1946, in Vanport, attended Vernon Grade School, Jefferson High School, the University of Oregon and Portland State University.

Jason Daniel Bryngelson

May 26, 1990 — Feb. 22, 2010

Native Oregonian Jason Daniel Bryngelson died on Feb. 22 in Providence St. Vincent Medical Center following a seizure and heart failure. The resident of Beaverton was 19 years old.

Born on May 26, 1990, in Portland to Debra Newman Davis and the late Walter L. Bryngelson, he was raised and educated in the Hillsboro and Beaverton area. He graduated from Westview High School and was preparing to join the Army.

He was working hard to cut weight and finished all his tests.

As a youngster he was in the Boy Scouts of America and learned early about helping others. He was active in youth football programs and played football at junior high and Westview High School.

He loved track and field, participating in shot put and discus. He was also into weight lifting.

His last gift to the world was being an organ donor so that he could save or better the lives of others.

Among his personal hobbies were camping and fishing, as long as he didn’t have to go out on the ocean. He liked visiting with his friends and hanging out with his dog Koi.

He took many trips to Las Vegas, the first of many with one of his friends, and they hit it big at one of the games, winning stuffed animals, electronics and several other armloads of prizes.

He had two “dads:” Walter Bryngelson and Duane Davis, the latter having raised him from when he was just a year old.

Survivors include his parents Debra and Duane Davis of Beaverton, sister Chris Bryngelson of Beaverton and several aunts and uncles.

Pastor Dave Fields of the Hillsboro First Baptist Church officiated at a celebration of life service on Feb. 28.

The family of Jason Daniel Bryngelson suggests that donations in his memory be made to the Westview High School Youth Football Program.

Services were handled by Donelson-Fir Lawn Memorial Center in Hillsboro.

Mary Garrett

March 9, 1918 — Feb. 22, 2010

Mary Garrett, a resident of King City from 1986 through 2000, died Feb. 22 at a memory care facility in Port Orchard, Wash., where she had lived after residing for almost 10 years in an assisted living program at the recently closed Hotel Cathlamet in Cathlamet, Wash.

She was 91 years old and suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for several years.

Mary Bennett Hopkins was born March 9, 1918, in The Dalles, the daughter of Anita Bennett and newspaperman Harold (Hop) Hopkins.

She and Bill Garrett were married in 1939 and lived in the Portland area, in Wishram, Wash., and in Minneapolis during Mr. Garrett’s long career as an official with the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railroad and, later, Burlington Northern.

The family of Mary Garrett remember her as a gentle, soft-spoken woman whose many interests included serving 21 months as an appointed member of the King City City Council. She was very active in the Republican Women’s Clubs in Klickitat County in Washington, and in King City.

In 1959 she was one of two women to represent Washington state at a luncheon hosted by President Dwight Eisenhower.

She was also associated for many years with the Youth For Christ organization and served as the executive director of the Mid Columbia YFC during the late 1950s and early 1960s.

She and her husband Bill, who preceded her in death in late 2000, enjoyed their retirement years, traveling and living for short periods of time in Florida, Wisconsin, Southern California and Oregon. She particularly enjoyed exploring new cities, discovering new restaurants and staying at elegant older hotels throughout the United States. By the time of her husband’s death, they had visited every state except Alaska.

Surviving are sons Bill, Brent, Bob and John, three daughters-in-law, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. One of Mrs. Garrett’s greatest joys was finding occasions to bring them all together and she loved the many hours she was able to spend with them.

The ashes of Mary Garrett will be interred next to her late husband’s in the Bennett family plot in The Dalles.
