Skanska recently announced the promotion of Steve Clem to vice president of preconstruction for Oregon. Clem, who formerly served as director of preconstruction, will now be involved with cost estimating, value engineering, and constructability reviews for all construction projects in the Beaverton office.
“Steve is a very talented and dedicated professional who is not only an expert in preconstruction, but also has proven to be a leader in green building locally as well as nationally,” said Ross Vroman, general manager of Skanska’s Oregon office.
During his 12-year tenure with Skanska, Clem has been instrumental in driving change as it relates to sustainable practices in the construction profession both locally and nationally. He serves on the company’s National Green Council and is an expert in sustainable building practices. Most notably, he played an instrumental role on a team of sustainability experts who were selected to work on the Living Building Financial Study for the Cascadia Region Green Building Council; the results of which have implications locally as well as globally. In addition to lending his expertise on the study, he serves as a living building ambassador for Cascadia providing valuable insight into the Living Building Challenge to companies and organizations throughout the Northwest.
Clem is a much sought-after speaker on green building practices and has become a well-known proponent of green building tenant education. In addition to Cascadia, numerous membership organizations have sought his expertise including the Association of Health Care Engineering, the American Institute of Architects, and the Chief Estimators Advisory Council of the American Society of Professional Estimators. He also has guest lecturered at the Art Institute of Portland and Mount Hood Community College’s Sustainable Building Advisor Program and served as an adviser to Oregon Business Council’s Summer Sustainability Series. Clem also helps Skanska present the National LEED Problem Statement at the Associated Schools of Construction annual student competition.
Clem received his bachelor of science degree in physics from the University of Puget Sound in 1995 and from there went to the University of Oregon for postgraduate studies in physics.
